Hungarian by birth, Georg Schmerholz was born to parents of Austrian and Armenian descent. His love of natural materials and his manual dexterity quickly developed into artistic sculpting influenced by the old European tradition of woodcarving. He spent years in Italy learning the exclusive techniques of marble carving and exhibited his acquired craftsmanship later in Sweden.

While becoming a sculptor, Schmerholz completed two years of engineering at the University of Cluj, in Romania, before he relocated to Canada. In the mid 70s he started his own construction company in Vancouver, designing retail/boutique interiors and building custom homes. He had acquired ten years of hands-on experience in all phases of construction, from designing and building homes to the finishing touches, incorporating exterior and interior customized artwork into landscapes and in-house architecture. Having built his home and gallery in British Columbia, he is now constructing a new residence and an eight-room art studio in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Schmerholz became known as a distinguished sculptor in the Northwest not only for his classical style but for his unique slant accomplished by the use of his own hand-crafted sculpting tools. Always a perfectionist, he made it his mission to obtain a phase-specific, in-depth knowledge of all the various sculpting techniques, which carries great importance in the final outcome and visual effect of any sculpture. These techniques include wood carving; clay/wax modeling; plaster and resin applications; mold making; all phases of bronze casting, including patining, welding, fabricating; and, naturally, stone carving. In his creative process he projects a high-technology virtual presentation of a proposed sculpture, thus enhancing the visual image for his clients before the piece even exists.

Schmerholz served as Director of the Sculptors Society of British Columbia and has taken an active role in many American and international shows and exhibitions. His recent relocation to California ensures a closer presence to the details of custom design and personal attention to his clientsí needs.
